SiriusXM

Senior Product Designer

August 2017 – March 2020

My projects included maintained oversight of Connected TV, CarPlay/Android Auto, Alexa, Sonos and SXM for Business Radios. I played a significant role integrating Pandora Stations, Xtra Channels, and Video into the SiriusXM ecosystem.

It started with a 90-day contract

I joined SiriusXM in August 2017 as a contractor to finalize designs for SiriusXM’s Apple TV and Amazon Fire TV apps. Over the next two-and-a-half years, I developed into a Sr. design role and carved out leadership responsibilities – owning the end-to-end design for a range of emerging products and partnering with engineers, researchers, product leaders and designers of all levels to establish consistent visual languages and interaction patterns that bridged the gap between core experiences and emerging platforms.

Connected TV

Drivers love SiriusXM in their cars, but weren’t taking our shows and music into their living room. I completely overhauled the Apple TV, Fire TV, Android TV, and Roku experiences, crafting ambient backgrounds, fluid transitions, and a persistent mini-player. I prototyped in Figma, ran five rounds of living-room usability tests, and dialed in animations until every interaction felt natural.

Result: one month after launch, returning customer streams increased 66%. Our App Store rating climbed from 4.2 to 4.9—users cited “beautiful visuals” and “seamless navigation” as highlights.

CarPlay & Android Auto

Streaming customers needed a safe, intuitive way to access SiriusXM on the road, so we set out to match the usability of flagship in-car apps. I designed a simplified grid of favorites and recently played channels, aligned every screen with Apple’s CarPlay and Google’s Android Auto design guidance, and built high-fidelity mocks that I validated in a driving simulator with real users.

Result: Initial user tests scored a CSAT of 91, and within six months of launch CarPlay became SXM’s #2 streaming app with over 850 K active users.

Alexa

We wanted SiriusXM’s 100 million subscribers to control live channels, on-demand shows, and Pandora Stations hands-free on Alexa devices. I mapped out voice intents, designed conversational flows and built authentication flows in the Alexa app, and collaborated with Amazon’s QA team on performance tuning.

Result: Voice-enabled listening grew 70% in six months, 14% of active subscribers used Alexa daily, and average voice listening per user reached 1.3 hours per week.

Pandora Stations

After acquiring Pandora, we needed to integrate personalized stations into our platforms so users could create their own stations and seamlessly switch between live channels. I collaborated with other designers to deliver our integrated solution, and implemented designs on Connected TVs, Tethered Audio, and Alexa.

Result: Within two months of launch, Pandora Stations became the most-used new feature in SiriusXM history.

Xtra Channels

SiriusXM launched algorithmically generated “Xtra Channels” to help customers discover new music, but needed an engaging way to surface them. I worked closely with other designers to contribute new components to the design system, then implemented these designs across Connected TVs, Tethered Audio, and Alexa.

Result: Xtra channels became one of SiriusXM’s fastest-growing discovery features, with 50% of streamers favoriting 1+ channel 3 months after launch.

Video

Howard Stern wanted his video content—concerts, interviews, music videos—into our apps. I designed a dedicated “Video” tab with rich media cards, storyboarded a mini-player overlay to keep audio playing while browsing, added closed-caption controls, and ran moderated pilot sessions.

Result: Within 30 days of launch, 28% of active Connected TV users watched at least one video and video content accounted for 20% of total Connected TV engagement.

It challenged me creatively

I worked alongside some amazing talents at SiriusXM, which made the switch from my previous career all the easier. In my time on staff, I evolved my portfolio from one product to many, implemented countless features and shipped on all types of devices. I grew my leadership skills by onboarding new designers and was an important part of building our team culture.

and opened a new door

In moving on, I was offered the opportunity to oversee the design for a hands-free cooking solution with Food Network. I credit my experience at SiriusXM for allowing me to be in the position to accept this offer. The cross-platform expertise and team leadership skills I developed there made me the right fit for building something entirely new in the kitchen.
